My kid has been into sewing lately; mostly dresses and accessories for her dolls. She uses old clothes, or whatever scraps she can get from mama. It’s lovely to see her working hard, often for hours, and being happy with her creations.

Her birthday is coming up and my wife had the idea for us to make her a sewing box to keep her supplies in. I thought it might be nice for it to have a pincushion top and a strap for her to bring it outside.

I got some 1″x8″ poplar and milled it down to 1/2″, and used oak plywood for the top and bottom.

The pincushion is padding from an old chair and some suede-like fabric that my wife had. Yellow is the kid’s favorite color. The strap is a belt. I cut it and put some grommets on the ends, into which went brass machine screws into acorn nuts. I would’ve liked to strap to be more flexible, but this is the only thing I could find locally that was red. Maybe I’ll mail order something else and replace it.

The hardware was just some stuff from my stash. I like those hinges.

Finished with three coats of amber shellac.

The box measures 16″ x 7″ x 8″.
