I’m not sure why it took me so long to make one of these. I suppose it’s because I sort of enjoy guitars all over the place. I have more than will fit on here, so they’ll probably still be all over the place. I made this to fit a specific spot in my studio and just guessed at the guitar spacing. I could have probably squeezed one or two more guitars in there, but better a little too much room around the guitars than too little and them bumping against each other when going in and out.

I used 100% scraps of wood to make this. I haven’t been buying any wood since the prices went to ridiculous heights. Most of it is some sort of spliced-together hardwood that was a bookcase that I used before deciding that I hate bookcases and much prefer shelves. The vertical pieces are softwood, pine I think, 1×6’s that were cutoffs from something else.

I thought about the bottom rails for a while. They’re 1×3’s, attached to the “feet” at about a 30 degree angle. I was about to try ripping some dowels in half to lay down on the 1×3’s, to be the contact point for the guitars, but my neighbor gave me some upholstery foam and I think this is much nicer. I got a box of giant leather pieces at a yard sale years ago and thought that’d be nice. I cut the first piece of leather too short and had a hell of a time stretching it to fit. But it worked in the end. I secured one side in my vise and use a heat gun while pulling the other side. I double-stick taped the foam to the 1×3’s, then wrapped the leather and stapled it on the underside. Used some upholstery tacks to keep the ends down.

I cut the notches along the top with a jigsaw, then refined them with a rasp. They ain’t totally perfect, but who cares. Added some cork tape to the inside of each. I have a feeling they won’t stay stuck, but we’ll see. I’ll think of something else, though I don’t think it’s really that necessary.

I didn’t think it needed much finish, or was too lazy to apply anything that would take a while to cure or dry. Also, I was out of shellac and didn’t want to wait the extra day for the flakes to dissolve, so I used the finish that I recently applied to my workbench top. Last n Last Spar Varnish + Boiled Linseed Oil + Mineral Spirits, 1:1:1. Good enough.

It’s 41″ wide, 30″ high. The notches are about 5″ apart, center to center.
